Things to do The South Hams of South Devon is an area of exceptional beauty and contrast with river estuaries, rolling hills and thatched cottages surrounding the lovely old towns of Dartmouth, Totnes, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Modbury and Ivybridge. The area enjoys one of the mildest climates in the whole of Britain. Indeed, the name "Hamme" is an old English word meaning enclosed or sheltered place. With Spring arriving early, long summers, warm autumns and mild winters, you can safely choose to visit at any time of year. With sixty miles of spectacular coastline and beaches, a rural landscape that has hardly changed in centuries and the majestic granite slopes of Dartmoor, the South Hams is a unique area worthy of its national status as a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Torbay Race Weeks sailing regatta will be held in 2008 from Friday 22nd August to 27th August. A 3 day Torbay championship. RNLI Pursuit Race, Corporate and Team Races, Torbay Fun Race and the Passage to Dartmouth Race. Lots happening ashore including fireworks around the bay.
Dartmouth and Kingswear are a pair of bustling towns on the River Dart joined by frequent ferries. Steeply wooded hills drop down to the river estuary where sailboats and brightly coloured trawlers bob at anchor. Seawards you can glimpse the cliff top church in the shadow of a protective castle and upstream the majestic Britannia Royal Naval College stands guard over the pretty town. From Kingswear Station a steam train puffs its way alongside the sparkling river and over all reigns an atmosphere of quintessentially English eccentricity and elegance. Totnes is widely known for such essentials of good living as whole foods, fine arts, antiques, second hand and antiquarian books, handmade shoes, ceramics, unusual boutiques, handmade furniture, musical instruments, crystals and complimentary therapies. Explore the Friday and Saturday Markets below the Civic Hall for a feast of bargains. The town enjoys good road and rail communications, and is within easy reach of both Dartmoor and the sea, making it an ideal holiday centre at any time of the year. Totnes has always been a market town and centre of trade for the surrounding countryside, and this is still the case. A full range of shopping and banking facilities can be found in and around the main streets. The shops are friendly and individual, as befits a place of such character. Traditional butchers, greengrocers and bakers can be found, all emphasising quality and customer care. Locally made, healthily prepared food and drink can be bought here, fresh from the producer.
